Job Title: Van Driver

Accountability: Aging Services Director

Job Summary/Function: Under the general supervision of the Director Aging Services, the Van Driver has the primary responsibility for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of the clients during bus transportation to and from the agency.  It is also the role of the Van Driver to: guarantee that the bus is clean and in proper working condition at all times; determine and follow safe and efficient bus routes; ensure all clients are in appropriate safety restraints; maintain all transportation records required by the program. The Van Driver also acts as a link between the Director of Aging Services and the clients.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures the safety and well-being of clients being transported to and from the program.
  • Completes a daily inspection of the van, reporting any conditions of concern to the Director, or delegated staff person, before transporting clients.
  • Ensures that the communication device (e.g. cellular phone) is in proper working order before each trip.
  • Arranges for and ensures completion of routine maintenance of van (e.g., oil change); transporting the van to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.
  • Ensures that the van always has sufficient fuel.
  • Ensures that there is always fresh drinking water on the van.
  • In consultation with the Director, develops and follows efficient and safe bus routes that ensure no client will be on the bus more than one hour.
  • Operates van in such a way that road and safety regulations are always followed; reports any traffic violations to the Director immediately.
  • Follows safe van loading and unloading procedures.
  • Keeps the van clean and free of debris; follows other van cleaning procedures.
  • Routinely inventories van emergency and first aid supplies and equipment, reports needs to the Director, or delegated staff person.
  • In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates clients according to written and practiced procedures.
  • In the event of an accident, assures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written accident report as required by delegate’s procedure and other authorities.
  • Participates in the agency’s self-evaluation process and grantee monitoring visits, as requested, and complies with any Program Improvement Plans developed.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Knowledge of the challenges and strengths of older adults and families. Effective oral and written communication skills commensurate with the responsibilities of the position are required. Previous experience driving a 12 passenger van preferred.

Physical and Other Requirements of Position

Tasks that involve infrequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids or tissues. Risk involved with travel on main highway, side streets and rural roads during business travel. This job involves sitting for long periods as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and climbing. Able to work a flexible schedule. Must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.

Training Expectations and Opportunities

  • First Aid and CPR training
